Zak Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Controversial 'Weak Men' Comments

The English opener Zak Crawley suggested he had no knowledge of comments made by captain Stokes regarding the dressing room not being "weak men".

Stokes made those words in multiple conversations following his team's defeat in the second Ashes against the Australians previously.

In the lead-up to the Adelaide Test, where the visitors now face a series loss at the earliest opportunity, Stokes noted he had let his sentiment to "drift around" among the playing group.

"I've done the necessary discussions in recent days that I needed to have done," remarked the England leader.

But, following Crawley scored a knock of 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. Our approach is to take everything that is said in the media with some skepticism," Crawley continued.

Frank Discussions and Steady Philosophy

Stokes issued his "weak men" observation subsequent to his side were beaten in the second Test to go two matches behind.

The team subsequently went on a break to Noosa in the gap between the second and the upcoming Tests.

Before this match, he revealed his players had held "honest" conversations and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their battle to stay alive in the Ashes battle.

Nevertheless, Crawley asserted the messaging from Stokes and coach McCullum had stayed consistent with their prior tenure in leadership.

"The atmosphere has been very positive, the same as always," noted the opener. "It's on maintaining positivity, play our way, with great liberty. We believed we could do something special entering this Test."

Australia On the Verge of Rapid Series Victory

The opener's wicket on day four was part of a crucial triple-strike by Australian off-spinner Lyon.

Lyon's triple strike in 20 deliveries – he also bowled Harry Brook and Stokes himself – meant England six down for 207 chasing a notional total of 435 runs.

Consequently, the home team require four wickets on the final day to secure an unassailable three-nil lead after three matches played.

Defeat would prolong England's winless run in this country to 18 consecutive matches and condemn them to a fourth straight away Ashes defeat.

The current battle is set to be decided in only 11 days of cricket – with England losing the initial matches in two and four days respectively.

The last time 1921, when Australia sealed a series win in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the urn been determined more swiftly. The hosts have also won in eleven days on two other occasions in the modern era.

"This is disappointing," said the batsman. "We came here to regain the Ashes and we're facing elimination now."

"There remains plenty to play for and we'll certainly approach it with that mindset," he continued.

"It's been tough. They're a formidable side. It was inevitably hard touring here to face them. They entered as the favourites and have demonstrated their quality."

Pope's Position In Question

Although the opener's performance in the third Test likely secures doubts about his immediate future in the side, Pope appears under immense pressure for his position in the Melbourne Test starting December 26th.

The Surrey batsman was out for 17 in England's second knock on Saturday, adding to his modest returns versus the old enemy.

In 16 Ashes innings, Pope has failed to score a fifty and averages just 17.62.

Only one other English batsman since 1900 – Amiss – has played an equal number of innings in the top order in Ashes Tests and recorded a poorer average.

But, Crawley said any notion Pope is under the microscope comes from "you guys" – meaning the journalists – "not inside the camp."

"We all know of his considerable talent," said he. "Ollie has enjoyed a good year to be frank."

"He has produced several excellent innings. This is talk externally. There is no chat of that nature on Ollie amongst the players," Crawley concluded.
