The Tottenham defender scored twice as Tottenham prolonged their winning streak in away games in the Premier League and handed Everton their initial loss at their new home.

Everton were unbeaten in their five previous fixtures at their new ground at the dockside location, having left their historic home behind after 133 years at the end of the previous campaign.

But Spurs captain the Dutchman pounced twice from set-pieces in the opening 45 minutes to put their strong form at risk, and they were unable to mount a comeback before the midfielder - set up by ex-Everton forward Richarlison - nodded in a final goal to put the game to bed.

Jake O'Brien believed he had levelled the tally five minutes after Van de Ven's opener, glancing a bullet header past Guglielmo Vicario from an Everton corner.

The Portuguese striker, meanwhile, missed a number of chances, while the Italian goalkeeper made a series of fine stops to ensure Tottenham went five away games without defeat in the Premier League.

But the video assistant referee intervened, advising Craig Pawson to review the goal on the screen and the official decided that Jack Grealish and Iliman Ndiaye were in offside positions and had impeded with the Tottenham goalkeeper.

This victory elevates the manager's side into third place in the Premier League, a handful of points off local foes and table-toppers Arsenal.

Everton stay in 14th position and are half a dozen points ahead of the relegation zone.

Tottenham analysis: Van de Ven excels in duties at both ends of pitch

After a uninspiring midweek display in the Champions League against Monaco, where they managed a mere attempts on goal, Frank opted for the French striker in attack instead of former Toffees player the Brazilian.

The new arrival was unable to influence the game before being replaced for Richarlison after an hour on the field, but it emerged he wasn't needed in the final outcome.

Centre-back the Dutchman converted into an offensive threat to be feared.

Tottenham's opening strike came from a well-worked set-piece play, with the midfielder directing the ball toward the face of goal for an unmarked Van de Ven to head home.

And the captain - stepping up as captain in Cristian Romero's unavailability - notched his second in added time as he outjumped Jordan Pickford to nod in.

The Dutchman was equally impressive in defensive duties, partnering effectively with Kevin Danso as the pair dealt superbly with the numerous deliveries sent their way by Everton.

Everton analysis: Everton lacking finishing touch

Everton's new home had been a fortress, but it appears the novelty may have faded slightly and supporters flocked to the exits after Sarr's third for Tottenham.

The end in the team's winning streak at home won't be a major worry for David Moyes, but their attacking woes are.

The forward and Thierno Barry - the Toffees' two established centre-forwards - had scored only a single goal combined before the weekend's outing.

And they were unable to add to that miserable record on a damp and dreary evening on Merseyside.

The striker's performance was epitomized when he chose to bicycle-kick a golden opportunity from close range, even with having room and time to reposition for a simpler shot that would have tested the keeper.

The substitute, too, was unable to make an impact after replacing the starter in the 65th minute.

It wasn't for a lack of chance. Most of the home side's offensive moves came through the winger and Ndiaye, who tirelessly whipped threatening crosses into the Spurs penalty area.
