Two Victims Revealed in the Providence Campus Incident as Law Enforcement Continue Manhunt for Killer.

Both young individuals who lost their lives in Saturday’s mass shooting in Providence were being remembered Monday – as a manhunt for their assailant persisted following the release by Rhode Island officials of the only individual detained in connection in the case.

Honoring a Lost Student

The student Ella Cook, a second-year student from Alabama, was described as “an incredible, grounded, faithful, bright light”, according to the Cathedral Church of the Advent, Birmingham, which paid tribute to her at a ceremony on Sunday.

Her role included second-in-command of Brown’s chapter of the campus GOP group, the group said. The White House press secretary also posted sympathies publicly, remarking: “It's indescribable. Thinking of her kin and peers, especially her parents.”

MukhammadAziz Umurzokov

The second fatality was MukhammadAziz Umurzokov, an Uzbek national in his freshman year at the renowned school, according to relatives.

His name was officially acknowledged by the foreign office of Uzbekistan.

“He was exceptionally gentle, witty, and bright. His ambitions were lofty of becoming a neurosurgeon and aiding others,” his sibling Samira said in a memorial statement.

Details of the Attack

An additional nine individuals were injured in the weekend shooting in the school of engineering of Brown’s campus in Providence, during the school’s final exam period.

Law enforcement reported on Sunday evening that a man aged 24 detained in a search at a Hampton Inn about 17 miles from the campus earlier in the day was being released.

“A perpetrator remains free,” said the state's top prosecutor, Peter Neronha.

He continued, “Sometimes you head in one direction, and then you need to change course and go in another, and this is precisely what occurred over the last day or so.”

Public Fear

The city's mayor, Brett Smiley, admitted: “It is expected to provoke new worry for our community”.

The gunman began shooting inside a lecture hall in the engineering building on Saturday afternoon, firing more than 40 rounds from a 9mm pistol, a law enforcement official informed the media outlet.

Police that raided the lodging recovered a pair of pistols and two ammunition clips when the person of interest was arrested, the news agency reported.

The Wounded Victims

Among those wounded, one student was allowed to go home, stated the university president, Christina Paxson. An additional seven were in critical but stable condition, and one remained in critical care, authorities stated on Sunday.

A private school, a private K-12 school in the city of Durham, said a former student, Kendall Turner, was one of the critically injured.

More Condolences

Tributes were paid to Cook at a religious service in Birmingham on Sunday. A pastor commented, “She shone as a remarkable, stable, devout beacon not only during her upbringing... but at the university she was an incredible light in that particular place as well.”

A group leader, Martin Bertao, released remarks from the organization. “She was famed for her bold, brave, and kind heart as she served her chapter and other students,” he said.

The US ambassador, Jonathan Henick, said he was “extremely sorrowful” by the student's death in a message. “We extend our sincere condolences to the Umurzokov family, loved ones, and peers and mourn the loss of his bright future.”

The weekend's murders at Brown, the nation’s seventh-oldest university with about over seven thousand undergraduate and 3,000 graduate students, took place amid one of at least nearly 400 mass shootings recorded nationally so far in the current year, according to records. Monday was the 349th day of the year.
