The Former French President Preparing to Release Jail Diary Detailing His 20 Days In Custody
The ex-president of France will soon publish a book in the coming weeks titled Notes from a Cell, which recounts his experience served in jail.
This news was made less than two weeks following the ex-leader gained freedom while he appeals the guilty verdict for criminal conspiracy regarding a scheme to acquire presidential race money provided by the leadership of the late Libyan dictator.
Life Behind Bars: Solitary Musings
“Inside jail one sees little, and activities are scarce,” he notes in one passage, suggesting the memoir will focus on his musings during solitary confinement rather than wider commentary of the packed and crisis-hit jail system in France.
“Quiet is absent, which doesn’t exist at the prison, where there is endless commotion,” he states. “The noise unfortunately never stops. But, just like the desert, personal reflection is strengthened in prison.”
Release Hearing: Recounting the Hardship
During his plea for freedom, he participated remotely from his cell, depicting prison life as exhausting. He stated to the judge: “I want to pay tribute the correctional officers, who are exceptionally humane, easing this ordeal manageable – because it is a nightmare.”
“I never imagined at this stage of life, I’d be in prison. It’s an ordeal that has been imposed on me. I confess it’s hard, deeply straining. It has an impact on any prisoner because it’s gruelling.”
First of Its Kind
Sarkozy, who led the nation for a five-year term, was the first ex-leader from the EU and the first leader since WWII in the French Republic to serve time in prison.
Ahead of his incarceration he declared he planned to utilize the opportunity for authoring a memoir.
Books in Prison
It remains unclear whether he had time to read and critique the volumes he brought with him: a biography of Jesus in two parts and Alexandre Dumas’s novel the classic tale, where a wrongfully accused individual ends up incarcerated later flees to exact retribution.
Daily Reality
He was placed in isolation for his own security in a cell roughly 100 square feet with his own shower and toilet at La Santé prison in the city. Two bodyguards occupied the next cell.
It was stated his diet consisted just yogurt during his stay due to concerns meals provided might have been spat on. Although he had access to cook for himself yet he declined, based on unnamed sources. It is uncertain if the memoir includes meals during incarceration.
Legal Perspective
His attorney, who saw him regularly each day while he was in prison, informed the court security would be better out of prison rather than in custody. “He has faced menacing messages, heard shouts after dark plus rapid actions in a neighbouring cell during an inmate’s self-injury.”
Charges and Sentence
He entered custody last month after a Paris court gave him a five-year sentence on conspiracy charges over a scheme to secure election financing for his presidential bid.
He denies wrongdoing and has appealed against the verdict, with a new trial is scheduled for the coming spring.
