The Eurovision Song Contest Used to Be a Whimsical Delight – Yet It Has Become a Strategic Method to Whitewash War.

A recent initialism emerged several months following the onset of the military campaign against Gaza. Labeled WCNSF, it signifies “Wounded child, no surviving family”. This acronym is specific to Gaza, per insights from doctors including child health specialists. Typically, it is unusual for doctors to care for a child who has seen the death of their complete family. But, there has been no semblance of normality about the genocide in Gaza, where whole bloodlines have been eradicated and the number of young amputees exceeds that of any other region in the world. Nothing ordinary in scores of doctors arriving back from a devastated terrain with reports of children being intentionally shot at.

A Living Nightmare In Spite Of a Reported Truce

Gaza remains a profound humanitarian disaster. Vital medicines and equipment are failing to reach those in need, and international watchdogs assert that violations are still being committed. Officials has denied these claims, just as it disavows everything it is charged with. Yet as grieving children who lost parents are now enduring frigid conditions in temporary shelters, there is some ostensibly positive news: apparently nothing is going to stop the Eurovision from pursuing its stated mission of “togetherness and cultural exchange.” The contest will continue to offer a welcoming platform for Israel, although several European countries have now pulled out in protest. Since this, it seems, is what international harmony resembles.

The contest, notably excluded Russia from taking part in 2022 because of the “serious conflict in Ukraine”. Yet the conflict in Gaza appears to be treated differently.

A Selective Vision

Forget the fact that Israel was alleged to have used irregular participation methods last year in what seems to have been an bid to manipulate Eurovision. Forget the fact that a young child was allegedly fatally struck in Gaza recently. Forget the fact that aggression from Israeli settlers and forced displacement in the West Bank have surged. Disregard the condition that foreign reporters are still blocked from independent reporting in Gaza. None of this, it would seem, should be permitted to obstruct of Eurovision’s cherished spirit of unity.

The Pageant Proceeds Against a Backdrop of Unimaginable Suffering

Eurovision marks seven decades next year – almost double the average life expectancy of a person in Gaza at present. The event will proceed, but it will never be able to restore the whimsical pleasure it historically embodied. An institution that initially championed togetherness has transformed into a cynical way to whitewash war.
