No fewer than 16 lives lost their lives and in excess of 40 sustained injuries when assailants opened fire at a Hanukah gathering at Bondi Beach, a tragedy local authorities have labeled a act of terrorism.

In the latest update, authorities have announced the death toll is 16, which includes one of the alleged gunmen. Furthermore, 42 injured people were admitted to the hospital.

The deceased have not yet been publicly named, but authorities state their ages are between 10 and 87 years of age.

Here are the victims who have been named so far.

Eli Schlanger

Originally from London rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was initially identified.

Known as a father of five children, he served as the assistant rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Relatives and friends spoke of him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very warm outgoing person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How is it possible that a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, have his life ended in this way?” a relative remarked.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the arrival of their youngest child just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, as stated by his wife.

She described the events before the shooting, explaining they were standing when the shooting started. “He shielded me because he wished to be near me,” she stated.

The couple were both Holocaust survivors, having endured immense hardship in their childhood. They had later relocated to Australia from Ukraine.

Dan Elkayam

French authorities have confirmed that French man Dan Elkayam is among the victims.

Publicly, the Foreign Minister expressed that France stood with his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This low act is a fresh and tragic example of a revolting outpouring of hatred against Jews that we must combat,” the statement read.

A casualty is a bystander who attempted to intervene to confront one of the gunmen. Described as a hero, he received gunshot wounds but is recovering well in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a public affairs professional. It has been reported he was hurt and underwent treatment in hospital.

He wrote, he recounted the scene as an “horrific scene,” but also noted the response of those who rushed to help. He stated he believed it was a “stroke of luck” he was alive.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was another casualty in the shooting. He said he listened to “dozens and dozens” of gunshots.

“Initially, I believed it was something less lethal, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he said. “I was hit. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
