Senegal's Rising Talent Camara: From Aspirations to Tournament Favorites.

When I enter the room, Lamine Camara grabs a football he won’t let go of throughout the conversation. It’s a simple visual metaphor for a ambition he has always held onto. “I only wanted the beautiful game; my mind was set on nothing else,” states the Monaco and Senegal midfielder.

His resolve and raw talent convinced clubs like Génération Foot, Metz and Monaco. However, the hardest approval to secure didn't come from a sporting director or manager, but his own father. “He was against me to play football but it’s because he hadn’t seen me play,” explains Camara.

Overcoming Initial Obstacles

Eventually, on “a special day,” Camara earned his father’s blessing to pursue his path in the game. Another challenge was his modest frame, which discouraged his hometown team Casa Sports from giving him a deal.

However, Génération Foot – the club that produced talents including Sadio Mané, Papiss Cissé and Ismaïla Sarr – saw his potential instantly. Following he earned the MVP in a local competition, Génération Foot were “shocked” to discover he was not tied down. They moved fast. “I was taken directly to the academy. They didn’t want me from returning to Casamance,” Camara said.

An Unforgettable Year and Continental Arrival

This move put him on a pathway to Europe. A defining period was 2023, “a year to remember,” starting with him lifting the African Nations Championship. Just weeks later, though tired, he played in the U-20 Africa Cup, guiding his nation to the title and earning player of the tournament.

A month later, he signed for Metz, following in the footsteps of Mané. “Settling in wasn't a challenge,” says the youngster. He resides by himself in Europe, a situation his relatives encourage to maintain his concentration.

Influences and On-Field Identity

Distractions aren't a problem for Camara, who looks up to Kevin De Bruyne’s “humility” and superb playing qualities. He is also a huge fan of players like Fede Valverde, Toni Kroos, and his Senegal colleague Idrissa Gana Gueye.

His ball striking and precision from set pieces are key strengths. Camara confesses he must to control his competitive fire, after being shown red early in his spells at both Metz and Monaco. “It is a habit I carry with me!” he quips.

Monaco, Teammates and Upcoming Ambitions

With his current club, he values learning from teammates like Denis Zakaria and especially Paul Pogba. “As soon as I heard Monaco were interested in Pogba, I thought we are really lucky,” Camara noted.

Currently, attention is firmly on the Afcon tournament with Senegal. “We are the team to beat – we can’t hide from that. If you beat England in their own country…,” he states, referencing a historic 3-1 win in Nottingham.

On a potential transfer to the Premier League, he remains focused on Monaco for now. “I am very comfortable here,” he insists. He is frequently teased by icon El-Hadji Diouf about Camara's two Africa Young Player of the Year awards. He laughs, but is serious about winning the main top prize in the future.

“The pressure is on us – that's the reality. If you beat England at Wembley… it instills belief.”

Looking ahead, Lamine Camara combines a modest start, steely determination, and grand ambitions as he aims to lead Senegal to continental glory and forge his own lasting legacy in the game.
