Russian President Vladimir Putin Assures Steady Crude Oil Shipments to India in Rebuff of Washington Sanctions

During a defiant signal to the United States, Leader Vladimir Putin stated to Prime Minister Narendra Modi that Russia stands ready to guarantee “uninterrupted” supplies of energy resources to India. This declaration came as the two leaders met in Delhi and asserted their partnership were “resilient to outside influence.”

A Message For the United States

Putin's comments, issued after the annual summit, was widely seen to be targeted at the United States and its allies, which have tried to urge New Delhi into reducing its longstanding relations with Moscow. The context follows earlier Washington's moves, notably additional trade penalties targeting New Delhi because of its buying of Moscow's energy exports.

“Moscow remains a dependable supplier of oil and gas and anything needed for the advancement of India’s industry,” Putin said. “Russia is prepared to continue ensuring the steady delivery of energy for the rapidly growing Indian economy.”

The Indian leader, without referencing crude directly, supported the theme by stating that “energy security has been a robust and vital pillar of the Indo-Russian alliance.”

Questioning American Pressure

Before the summit, during a media interview, Putin had criticized Washington's stance regarding India's oil imports. He argued, “Should America can claim the privilege to buy our atomic materials, then why can't India claim the equivalent access?”

The visit marked his maiden trip to India since the start of the situation in Ukraine, and the two nations undertook a visible effort to project that the bond between the heads of state persisted strongly.

A Warm Greeting

Taking an rare step, Modi personally greeted Putin as he disembarked. The two shared a warm hug like old friends before holding a private dinner the night before the summit.

The Indian prime minister in his statement called India's partnership with Russia as “a beacon” and said it was “founded on reciprocal esteem and strong faith.”

Expanding Defence and Economic Cooperation

The bilateral summit yielded multiple key agreements in the fields of defence and financial collaboration. A cornerstone agreement was the signing of an economic cooperation programme extending until 2030, which aims to boost mutual trade to a hundred billion USD per year by the 2030 deadline.

Additionally pledged to restructure their strategic cooperation. Even as Russia remains India's largest source of defence equipment, the volume has reduced over the past decade as India has sought widen its sources.

The joint statement emphasized an agreement on the collaborative manufacturing of cutting-edge weapons platforms, even if direct reference of purchases such as the Su-57 fighter jet were omitted.

Ultimately, Moscow and Delhi reiterated that amid the “current complex, difficult, and unpredictable global landscape, the Indo-Russian partnership continue to be resilient to outside forces.”
