New York City's incoming mayor, Zohran Mamdani, has confirmed to take up residence in the iconic Gracie Mansion, departing from his rent-controlled apartment that became a focal point during his election bid.

A Historic Residence

Constructed in 1799, Gracie Mansion has functioned as the official residence for most New York City mayors from the World War II era.

But, Mamdani, for whom housing costs is a core platform, hesitated to declare this decision right away following his electoral win in November.

"My choice came down to keeping my family safe and the importance of focusing all of my focus on implementing the platform on affordability New Yorkers supported," the Mayor-Elect declared on Monday.

A Fond Farewell

His home was in the Astoria neighbourhood, a district renowned for its abundance of cultural enclaves and culinary diversity.

"To the people of Astoria: my gratitude for demonstrating what is great about New York City," he noted.

"Although my address will change in the neighborhood, it will continue to reside inside me and the work I do," he said.

Political Debate

During his campaign, Mamdani connected his core platform – a rent freeze – to his circumstances as a tenant.

But his critics, mainly ex-governor Andrew Cuomo, challenged Mamdani for remaining in the apartment although he came from a well-known family.

A House Not Always Used

Not all mayors have chosen to live at Gracie Mansion.

Michael Bloomberg, the business magnate, preferred to remain in his private home on Manhattan's Upper East Side throughout his tenure, which concluded in 2012.

In his view, Bloomberg argued it could serve as a space for official events, and pushed for significant upgrades of the aging mansion.

A Grand New Home

When Mamdani moves into Gracie Mansion sometime around his swearing-in on 1 January, he will experience a setting far removed from his modest Astoria digs.

With its butter yellow paint, forest green window covers, and pristine railings, Gracie Mansion is a picturesque home with views of the East River.

Internally, the first floor of the Federal-style mansion is decorated consistent with the home's early 19th-century origins.

The estate, which is said to has several bedrooms, also includes increased security measures to protect the mayor and his family.

Ghostly Tales

A number of people have suggested that Gracie Mansion also has ghostly inhabitants.

Chirlane McCray, the spouse of former mayor Bill De Blasio, once said that doors occasionally opened and shutting on their own, and the floorboards made strange noises.

Former Mayor Eric Adams was more certain. "I don't care what anyone says," he declared in 2022. "It has spirits in there, man."

Affordable Housing Lifeline

Mamdani's current apartment is under rent control, meaning the city imposes caps on how much landlords can hike the monthly cost each year.

Tenants consider these apartments valuable lifelines as the housing expenses rises faster than the means of many residents.

Data indicated Mamdani paid about $2,300 each month for his apartment.

Per figures from the property website Zillow, the median rent for a studio or one-bedroom in New York City is $3,500 a month.
