The beloved police drama AC-12 is officially returning for its seventh installment, confirmed by the BBC.

An upcoming six-part series written by Jed Mercurio starts production in Belfast in the coming months, as confirmed by the network.

The actress shared her enthusiasm about the return, saying she was "thrilled" about the show's renewal. Her co-star added, "How wonderful it is to know that the main trio will be back filming together soon."

The previous series wrapped up in 2021 with a finale that drew in more than 17 million viewers. Speculation about a new season have been circulating for some time, but official word only arrived this week.

Fresh Obstacles for The Team

The seventh season begins with AC-12 no longer existing and renamed as the new police oversight body, according to the announcement.

Steve Arnott, Vicky McClure's role, and Adrian Dunbar's part remain tasked to combat corruption within the police force.

Their work "faces unprecedented challenges", and in this climate, the trio will take on their "most delicate case so far."

Fresh Face and Complex Case

A new character, Det Insp Dominic Gough, described as a charismatic officer celebrated for busts of organized crime, is accused of misusing his authority to become a sexual predator.

Yet, this investigation could be a deliberate distraction from a larger danger still active in the background, plot details hinted.

In a statement, the creator commented: "Everyone involved are deeply thankful to the show's fans."

"It's an honor to have had countless fans track the ups and downs of AC-12 over six previous seasons and we couldn't be more delighted to be coming back for a seventh installment."

Mercurio continued: "Corruption in this country is supposed to have ended while Line of Duty was not airing, so I've been compelled to use my creativity."

Actor Responses

The Scottish actor described being part of the police drama as "the role of a career".

"Beyond the program's popularity but the colleagues I've collaborated with I now call dear friends."

"I can't wait to pull the waistcoat on again and get the team back together," he added.

Vicky McClure remarked: "It goes without saying I'm very happy Line of Duty is back! Can't wait to work with Jed, Martin and Dunbar again. The city, we'll see you soon!"

The veteran actor commented: "While anticipating the unit return, how exciting it is to know that the Three Amigos will be working together next year."

"Delighted with the announcement and looking forward to those mercurial twists and turns."

Show History

Line of Duty launched in the early 2010s and became one of the most popular TV dramas of the past ten years, featuring guest stars such as Lennie James.

The BBC haven't revealed when the upcoming series will premiere.

The conclusion of series six drew the long-running storyline about the search for kingpin known as "the mysterious H" to a close, and producers said at the time there were no plans for additional seasons.

Nevertheless, the network confirmed on this week that a new season is now being produced.
