LeBron James's Historic Point-Scoring Run Ends, Yet Lakers Claim Win Over Raptors.
The Lakers star knew his monumental streak of putting up 10+ points was in danger. In that crucial moment, however, he wasn't bothered.
The correct basketball play involved passing the basketball – which is exactly what he did. Consequently, the legendary streak finished.
James's astounding streak of over 1,200 straight NBA regular season outings scoring at least ten ended on Thursday night, as the NBA's all-time scoring leader was limited to a mere eight points during the Los Angeles Lakers' close win against Toronto. He delivered the decisive pass, setting up Rui Hachimura to knock down a three-pointer as time expired.
“None,” James replied in response on the record concluding. “The team got the victory.”
An Unselfish Decision Seals the Win
LeBron had the chance to sought to clinch the contest – and extended his record – with the last shot, yet he opted to pass to Hachimura in the left corner. Hachimura made the shot, with LeBron exulted triumphantly.
“Just playing the game the right way. Make the correct play,” James noted. “That’s just been how I operate. It's how I was taught the game. I've played that way for two decades.”
“LeBron is very conscious of his point total he's scored during a game,” stated the team's head coach the coach. “He did it like he’s done throughout his career.”
The Run's End Game
James re-entered the contest one last time at 5:23 remaining, the win along with the historic run on the line. He had only six points on a 3-for-15 performance by that point.
He got a bucket with 1:46 left to tie the game and missed a mid-range jumper with 1:01 left that would have gotten him to ten points.
He avoided taking another shot – though the opportunity was there. Austin Reaves found him in the waning seconds, yet LeBron opted to make the pass instead of shooting.
The basketball deities, if you approach it correctly, they often bless you,” the coach concluded.
Reflecting on a Staggering Streak
The record commenced back in January 2007. It was easily the longest double-digit streak in professional basketball: His Airness, Michael Jordan had 866 consecutive double-digit scoring games, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar recorded 787, and The Mailman had the fourth-longest run with 575.
He is such a team-oriented player,” said teammate Jake LaRavia.
He simply plays the game of basketball. He had the opportunity but due to who he is on the court and his character off the court, he chose the team play, passed it to Rui and claimed the game.”
Scoring in double figures had typically been a guarantee long before the final period. During James’s streak, he had reached the 10-point mark entering the fourth over twelve hundred times prior to Thursday.
Yet two such single-digit games after three periods had occurred in the last week: He recorded nine points going into the fourth versus the Mavericks last week, then had six before the fourth quarter versus the Suns on Monday night.
LeBron was able to keep the streak alive against the Suns. The very next outing, it finished – yet he was celebrating anyway.
My focus is to make the right play. That comes naturally, win, lose or draw,” James declared. “You make the unselfish play, the sports deities consistently giving back to me.”
