Israeli citizens mark two-year anniversary of October 7th attacks as Gaza ceasefire talks continue
Citizens have come together throughout the country to commemorate 24 months since the Hamas-conducted assault on that fateful day in October 2023, as talks advanced in Egypt over a conclusion to the war in Gaza.
The incident saw over 1,200 people killed and 251 others taken back to Gaza as hostages. It was the uniquely deadliest day for Jews since the World War II.
Israel answered by initiating a military offensive in Gaza which has claimed over 67,000 people, according to the region's Hamas-administered health ministry. Its figures are regarded as trustworthy by the United Nations and other international bodies.
"The aggressive opponents have struck forcefully, but they have not defeated us," Benjamin Netanyahu stated on that day.
He also pledged to "achieve all the objectives of the war: the homecoming of all the kidnapped, the elimination of the Hamas administration and the assurance that Gaza will never again create a risk to Israel".
Remembrance Ceremonies Across Israel
The government authorities delayed formal memorials until mid-October - after the completion of the festive season - but ceremonies still occurred around the country on Tuesday.
A commemorative event for the families of people killed in the Hamas incident was held in Tel Aviv. Put together by the families themselves, it was aired across Israeli TV networks.
Hours earlier, a minute's silence was respected throughout the country.
Negotiation Discussions in Egypt
Meanwhile, the conflicting parties' negotiating teams convened in the Egyptian coastal city of Sharm el-Sheikh for a follow-up session of indirect talks to discuss the provisions of the agreement.
A high-ranking delegate familiar with the negotiations said that an evening round of indirect talks began at 7 PM local time.
The official said the earlier meeting ended without concrete outcomes, due to differences over the recommended Israeli withdrawal maps from Gaza and over guarantees Hamas demands to make certain Israel does not restart combat after the initial stage of the agreement.
He commented that the discussions are "tough and have still not produce any major advancement," but pointed out that mediators are striving to narrow the disparities between the conflicting groups.
Essential Issues in Talks
- An enduring halt to fighting
- The swap of the prisoners still held by Hamas for detainees from Gaza
- The pullout of troops from Gaza
- Measures for humanitarian aid deliveries
- After-conflict administration of the area
Public Feeling
In the city's Hostages Square that day, 29-year-old a woman - whose brother endured the incident on the outdoor event, where many attendees were lost their lives and numerous more were taken hostage by Hamas militants - shared: "No location feels like home any longer and until each abducted person return not a single person will be secure."
"After we see everybody home returned, we can relax once more. Then we can start to heal," she concluded.
Outside the prime minister's residence in the capital, people congregated to demonstrate their support for the families of the captives. Israel says nearly fifty remain in detention in Gaza, approximately twenty of whom are considered to be surviving.
Demonstrator a participant remarked: "It's necessary do any agreement needed for the hostages to come back home. But we truly desire guarantees that we will be secure."
Surveys now frequently demonstrate that about the majority of Israeli citizens prefer the conflict to conclude in return for the freedom of the captives.
Gaza Conditions
At the area of the music event, grieving people assembled to honor the dead.
From the site, the noise of aerial bombardments and shelling could be noticed just a brief space away in Gaza, where witnesses said the intense Israeli attacks continued.
In Gaza City, air and artillery strikes were noted in the early hours of Tuesday in the western Tal al-Hawa, area and locality neighbourhoods and in the eastern district of Sheikh Radwan, as well the settlement to the northwest.
"Once the night comes, the fear appears with it," evacuated urban resident a mother, whose young son was died by an Israeli air strike previously, described.
"Me and my three children are fearful of the air strikes. During nighttime we are lying together, clinging, notably my smallest child who places his face on me throughout the night."
"Continuously we check the news to see the situation. And I'm worried that this ceasefire will not be achieved and that the war will return to us."
Health Situation
The medical facility in the urban area said it had accepted the corpses of several people by the midday, including a trio killed in an Israeli attack in the south part area.
Nasser hospital in the southern city of the city said two more victims had been brought there. One of them was killed by Israeli forces while looking for assistance to the south region, health workers stated.
