French authorities to begin stopping small boats in Channel following British demands
French officials have consented to start intercepting migrant vessels in the Channel, following months of insistence from the UK.
This policy shift follows the Prime Minister wrote to the President urging him to back the initiative and stating there currently "have no effective deterrent" in the Channel.
French maritime police will be allowed to intercept the small boats at sea, but only before they've collected their passengers, according to authoritative statements.
French authorities have infrequently intervened to prevent the overcrowded boats departing from the shoreline because it is considered too great a risk to both officers and civilians.
"It is essential that we deploy these methods this period... We have zero effective prevention in the Channel."
Currently, a French maritime police spokesperson says personnel will begin intervening at sea, with the objective of protecting lives.
Significantly, the spokesperson excluded the use of nets to intercept boats, which had previously been suggested as a potential method to snarl the engines of the boats.
The decision to intervene at all is a significant advancement, following a brief change towards a more aggressive approach this warmer season, which dropped off when the former government official left government.
That was highlighted in the summer month, in the run-up to a meeting between the UK leader and French president, when French police were observed wading into the sea to slash the hulls of a vessel.
Currently French authorities will once more be allowed to stop boats prior to they collect migrant passengers from the beaches of northern France, however it's uncertain how the small boats will be stopped.
Powerful gusts are currently postponing the start of intervention operations and the people-smuggling gangs will be seeking methods to adjust to avoid interception, as they have done so often in the past.
The Home Office and the Prime Minister's office have been approached for comment.
