Critical Role Campaign 4 Introduces the Soldiers Table

From the very beginning of Campaign 4, recently appointed game master the talented storyteller has kept viewers on edge with rich lore, a diverse cast of heroes, and a gripping narrative including celestial beings, evil spirits, and sinister influences growing in influence within the city.

Warning: Key plot points for the third episode of the new season follow below.

The Combat-Oriented Party Revealed

The latest chapter finished on a major cliffhanger and presented the first table of heroes who will separate from the primary party to begin their separate journey, apart from the remaining groups.

The Soldiers table features Teor Pridesire (played by the voice actor), the agile character (Laura Bailey), the strong-willed figure (Whitney Moore), Wicander Halovar (Sam), and Kattigan (the actor).

The Reason for Division

Considering an extensive roster, it was clear from the beginning that keeping everyone at one table would be impossible.

This explains, the initial installments of this story serve as an Introduction, weaving together the personal journeys before splitting into three smaller tables: Fighters, Strategists, and Questers.

Characteristics of the Warrior Group

As described by the DM, the warrior group is for participants who are drawn to a traditionally charged combat and conflict-driven gameplay experience where non-violent answers are few and far between.

Initially, characters like the reluctant priest Wicander might seem mismatched, but the developments of the third episode make it clear why these five characters are best suited for the Soldiers table.

Motivations for Departure

To begin with, the party has a clear idea where to proceed after a violent opening clash with the enemy group.

A former ally of Thjazi—whose death started the campaign’s events—manipulated the enemy for his personal gain, invading the hidden lair, assaulting the character, and taking all the enchanted items to dispose of.

The antagonist then cleared his obligations and escaped to a secure base in Gormalay, Timmony, beyond the urban center, with Cyd pursuing him.

Character Drivers

Secondly, each member has a personal reason to depart the metropolitan area:

  • Thimble, as the companion and closest confidant, wants revenge.
  • Kattigan is familiar with Timmony and cautions that it is a hostile environment.
  • The strong character and The healer, having resisted his house’s orders to eliminate the target and instead rescued him, have no safe haven.
  • Yet, their position as important members in the powerful family could assist the team reach areas they usually can’t.
  • Moreover, Teor swore a unbreakable promise to The savior for his deliverance and will now follow him everywhere.

Pursued by Authorities

Lastly, all of them are wanted by the rulers that control Dol-Makjar for a range of causes, making remaining behind too risky:

  • The agile adventurer and The hero are notorious outlaws.
  • The strong figure and Wicander defied the powerful family and the horde of evil beings they are aligned with.
  • The fighter is wanted dead by House Halovar.

This means them no alternative but to travel to the northern region in pursuit of the antagonist.

Future Episodes

Based on the recent installment’s post-show segment, we learn that the Soldiers table will not appear next week, leaving the rest of the players to assemble the Explorers and Schemers parties.

Fans can look forward to finding out which players will be assigned to which table in the season’s concluding setup installment, available to watch on October 24.
