Ben & Jerry's Founding Partner States Unilever Halted Pro-Palestinian Frozen Dessert Flavor
One of the co-founders behind the well-known frozen dessert company Ben & Jerry's has claimed how corporate owner the multinational conglomerate prevented the introduction for an innovative pro-Palestinian frozen dessert product.
The entrepreneur, who co-founded the company with his partner, announced how he plans to independently develop this new flavor as part of a personal collection highlighting issues the company has been barred from speaking out about.
Ongoing Conflict Between Creators versus Corporate Owner
This latest development intensifies the ongoing conflict between the internationally recognized dessert company with its corporate parent, the British packaged goods giant that has owned the ice cream brand since 2000.
The co-founders maintain that Unilever along with its ice cream arm Magnum unlawfully blocked Ben & Jerry's from "fulfilling its ethical commitments".
The Fruit Sorbet as an Emblem for Solidarity
The entrepreneur revealed via social media that he's developing an innovative watermelon-based sorbet, asking for public suggestions for the product's name plus potential ingredients.
“I'm doing what they couldn't,” Mr. Cohen commented in a cooking set. “I'm creating a watermelon-flavored ice cream that advocates for permanent peace for Palestinians and calls for addressing the harm that was done there.”
This particular fruit has become a symbol for support for the Palestinian people due to its coloration, that match those of the Palestinian flag – the distinctive four-color pattern.
Previous Social Engagement and Recent Developments
In 2021, Ben & Jerry's refused to sell their merchandise in areas occupied by Israel, resulting in the parent company selling their Israel business over to a local licensee, thereby permitting ongoing distribution within disputed territories.
This upcoming product line will be developed under Mr. Cohen's personal brand, the activist ice cream brand that was first created in 2016 to support former political contender Bernie Sanders with the product "Bernie's Return".
Leadership Changes plus Upcoming Plans
The founder indicated that he plans to develop additional frozen dessert varieties that address issues which Ben & Jerry's was prevented from speaking about openly by corporate restrictions.
This development follows partner Jerry Greenfield stepped down his position at Ben & Jerry's in September, following many years of involvement, citing worries regarding how its independence had been compromised after corporate moves to curb its social activism.
Previously, Ben Cohen stated how "Jerry has a really big heart and the ongoing dispute with Unilever was deeply distressing him."
"My heart leads me to continue to work inside the company to fight for corporate autonomy ensuring that the company can actualise its ethical purpose, the principles that established its foundation while upholding for decades," he explained to journalists.
