An Story of Unexpected Kindness: When a University Student Let Me Sleep on Her Dorm Floor

Back in 2006, I made a trip to the Australian capital for an interview at a medical college. My plan was I would book lodging upon arrival, yet once I got there, a large conference was in town and every single youth hostels and cheap hotels were completely sold out.

Hailing from Singapore, I thought the possibility of bed down in the airport – but quickly found that airport, not like the one back home, closes all night. With no idea what my next move should be and feeling increasingly desperate, I caught public transport and began walking near the casino, believing I could pass those hours somewhere that was open all night. Admittedly, this plan in the ideal condition for acing a crucial interview the next morning, however, being a broke student, luxury accommodation was impossible.

Our society requires more people who show such kindness.

I must have looked out of place because a woman spotted me wandering around downtown and asked if I was OK. I explained my predicament and right away she suggested I was welcome to sleep on the floor of her dormitory at ANU – an ideal turn of events, given that my my interview would take place the next morning. She went further by offering some food: one of the sandwiches she had from her part-time job. I was able to use warm shower facilities and a protected spot and secure to sleep.

Looking back, I now understand the significant risk she accepted as a young woman allowing a man who was a complete stranger stay in her room. In those days I existed within my own unawareness and did not consider to such safety concerns. Today, as a parent, I’m amazed she took that chance – yet incredibly thankful.

I didn’t end up attending the Australian National University, and I didn’t meet the student afterwards, but I’ve never forgotten her amazing act of human compassion. It is my wish life has returned her good deed abundantly. Our society requires more folks who show such kindness.
